Institute structure
The Institute of Cell Biology (Tumor Research) – IFZ for short – was founded in 1975 and is located at Essen University Hospital. The IFZ is divided into two chairs, several junior research groups and the Genomics & Transcriptomics Facility (GTF). The institute is managed by a board of directors consisting of the chair holders and the habilitated group and laboratory heads. In addition, the IFZ has its own administration, which reports directly to the respective Managing Director of the IFZ.
The IFZ’s research focuses on basic academic research into the development of cancer and cancer therapy. The aim of all working groups is to use various methodological and thematic approaches to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis, tumor progression and therapy response and thus to create the basis for improved and cause-oriented tumor therapy in the clinic. In order to achieve these goals, the IFZ staff use the most modern methods of biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology and tumor biology. Among other things, the IFZ uses modern methods of DNA microarray analysis, transcriptome and genome sequencing, high-resolution single cell analysis, high-speed cell sorting and a wide variety of mouse models, including transgenic ones.
Since its foundation, the IFZ has produced over 600 publications in internationally recognized scientific journals.
